Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our dog training services, methods, and what to expect when working with Kind Dog Training NJ.
What training methods do you use?
We use positive reinforcement and science-based training methods. This means rewarding behaviors we want to see more of and avoiding punishment-based techniques.
Where do training sessions take place?
Training can take place in your home, your neighborhood, or another agreed-upon location depending on your goals.
How long are sessions?
Most sessions are approximately 60-75 minutes, though this may vary slightly depending on your dog’s needs.
Do I need to be present during training?
Yes, unless your dog is doing one of our day training packages.
Your involvement is an important part of the training process. We'll guide you through exercises so you feel confident continuing the training between sessions.
How many sessions will my dog need?
This depends on your goals and your dog. Some behaviors can be addressed in a few sessions, while others benefit from a longer training plan.
What types of behavior issues can you help with?
We work with a variety of training goals, including:
• puppy training
• basic manners
• leash pulling
• jumping
• impulse control
• fear and anxiety
• reactivity
• confidence building
If you're unsure whether we can help, feel free to reach out.
Do you use punishment or correction-based training?
No. Our training is based on positive reinforcement and Fear Free principles. We do not use prong collars, choke chains, or shock collars. Our goal is to help dogs learn in a way that builds confidence and trust.
How do I get started?
All new clients begin with an initial consultation. During this session, we’ll discuss your goals, evaluate your dog’s behavior, and create a personalized training plan.
What should I have ready for our first session?
Please have:
• Your dog’s regular treats and some higher value treats, like chicken and cheese (small and soft preferred)
• Leash and flat collar or harness (no retractable leashes, 6 or 8 feet leashes are recommended)
• Any questions or goals you’d like to discuss
We'll guide you through the rest.
How quickly will I see results?
Some results can be seen after the first lesson, but long-term behavior change takes consistency and practice (for you and your dog), which is why packages are recommended for the best results.
What if my dog is nervous or reactive?
That’s okay! Many dogs we work with are fearful or reactive. Training sessions are structured to go at your dog’s pace while helping them build confidence. We will discuss the best plan of action before your initial consultation.
